How to Grow Moringa “Der Wunderbaum” from Seed

Translated from TROPICA instructions for Moringa (Moringa oleifera), photo of original German below:

Useful information. This fast growing, evergreen plant is cultivated as a useful and ornamental plant, thrives on almost every soil and forms pinnate leaves. The gold-colored flowers smell of honey. The seeds can be processed into cooking oil; the roots and leaves are edible. The juice of the roots helps against sore throats. After a few years, the moringa develops into a little tree that often forms a bottle-shaped trunk.

Origin. The moringa comes from the hot and dry regions of Northeast Africa.

Cultivation. Growing seeds in the house is possible all year round. Let the seeds soak overnight in warm water and then put them 1 cm deep in moist soil. But only keep the soil moist and not wet, otherwise the seeds can mold. Germination often takes place after 7 to 20 days at warm temperatures.

Location / light: The plant prefers a sunny location. A protected area in the garden is also ideal in summer.

Care: Choose a pot with a diameter of 15 cm right from the start because the plants grow quickly. Water evenly and protect the moringa from strong winds. It is better to give a little less water than too much. In cooler areas, the plant can only be kept in greenhouses, conservatories or apartments.

Wintering: Be sure to protect the moringa from frost. Towards winter, the plant sheds leaves.”
