Book Review: “Nature Anatomy” by Julia Rothman

Why do you need a book about Nature Anatomy on your bookshelf? I bought it to inspire my kid to learn about nature, but it’s become a much more inspiring text for my own nature observation.

Julia Rothman is an exquisite illustrator who draws you in to the details by alternating between broad swaths of earth science and ecology, then honing in on the specific anatomy of a bee or flower. As the pages turn, the exploration expands into a one new field of study after the next.

It’s inspired me to at least try to remember more of the parts of an ant or bee and to walk slower past a field to observe the different types of grasses. The artwork is clean, colorful, and inviting you to linger on a subject while excited to turn the page.

I recommend the print edition which is much more fun to move back and forth between different sections of the book. The colorful cover has a pleasant textured feel to it and I enjoy pulling it from the stack of my other Field Guides.
