Nymphalidae

Nymphalis sp.

This butterfly, Anthocharis cardamines, prefers to dine on crucifers [1]. In our local area, we have quite a bit of Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) growing throughout the woodland ravine, however there weren’t any growing when I saw this critter which may explain why he kept ‘running’ away from me to an area with more food.

Inachis io

Glanville Fritillary – Melitaea cinxia

Hyponephele sp.

Lycaena hippothoe

LHP include Polygonum bistorta; Rumex acetosa. I’ve seen it grazing on stinging nettle and yarrow later in summer.
