I have ALWAYS hated sponges. I hate them because they’re supposed to be used for cleaning, which makes me automatically want them to be CLEAN, which is impossible to do. In a world full of waste, I simply cannot accept the guidance to throw them out after only 1 or 2 weeks of use.
Whether you clean them in the dishwasher or the microwave, they are also the fastest path to harboring a colony of super-resistant bacteria that are as dense as a human stool.
After finding the all-natural sponges, I’ve finally felt better about holding a sponge in my hand. Not only that, I feel better about being able to add it to the compost rather than putting another dirty piece of plastic sponge into a land-fill.
There’s no need to buy the fancy ones with strings attached or special pads. These simple sponges are cut up pieces of a larger gourd plant. I prefer to buy a 6 pack that are cut to the right hand-held size for the sink, so that I always know that I have a space when one of them needs to be replaced.
Ergonomically — I prefer them over regular sponges as well because they fit so well into the hand, making it easier to grip and scrape pots and pans.
Of course, the ultimate sponge would be one that I grew on my own land. I’ve bought seeds and plan to help these annual growing vines to reach maturity so that I can dry, cut, and store my own, and have a steady of supply of sponges for years to come!
