In Love with Luxurious, Crisp “Feldsalat”

Living in Germany, I have come to adore this simple, clean, and airy leaf. In German, it’s called Feldsalat, characterized as “Mild” and “Nutty,” I have no idea if it’s being sold in the U.S., but the English name is Lamb’s Lettuce or Corn Salad. I also found a seed packet and learned that the Latin name is Juwallon.

Juwallon is supposedly a traditional German variety. It has shiny, dark green, oval leaves, forming a dense leaf rosette which are easy to harvest and don’t need much cleaning.

I ate the entire bag in one sitting, finding that it tastes supreme with Blue Cheese dressing, or Feta cheese and olive oil.

In terms of energy, it has 2.23 grams of protein per 100g, while only 1.83 grams of carbohydrates. The bag also said it has 3 grams of “Ballaststoffe” which translates into “roughage,” and I have no idea what that means.

And I’m not sure what Germans have against eating a lot of asparagus, but the bag from the grocery store recommends this as a way to add variety to eating lots of Asparagus, adding both asparagus and strawberries covered with Balsamic dressing.

Personally, this is an amazing change from buying the larger lettuce products with have to be cut, washed, dried, and have much less flavor.

I DEFINITELY intent to grow these delicious little treats, which as supposed to be fast-growing with high-yield.
